We’re debating now about when we should start Christmas. It’ll not be immediate–I’m pretty much over my cold and cough, needing perhaps one more day of being sensible, but Graham is still in the early stages, having deferred the beast so’s he could look after me. Much as we love rushing around all glowing cheeks and jollity, we’re not inclined to leave it until the last minute, either.
My instincts tell me we should start on Thursday, giving us a full two weeks to get shopping done, cards posted, the decorations up and running, and to plan and prepare a four day feast for two blokes, neither of whom enjoy eating and drinking to excess. I have a feeling that Graham wanted to have more work done on the house before stopping for the big end-of-year pig out. I’m gently steering him towards thinking of doing no more than a great clean and tidy, perhaps to include window cleaning.
Perhaps, before I go and collapse in front of the TV, ready for our evening wine, I should document my recipe for a hot rum toddy–best cold cure in the world:
Into a heat-proof glass, measure
- The juice of one large or two smaller lemons; fresher the better.
- A large spoon of solid honey; molasses will do if no honey to hand.
- A generous shot of good, strong, dark Navy rum; try for Pusser’s or for Woods 100, both of them well in excess of 100% proof.
- Stir, then top up with hot, not boiling water, stir again, and sip gratefully, allowing the fumes to penetrate to the parts of your URT you’d rather not think about.
Variant: Last thing at night the addition, just before you start sipping, of any soluble ‘flu and cold remedy in powder form. This is likely to give you a good night’s sleep, free from coughs once you’re settled on your pillow.
Cheers!

Ohmygosh, your remedy sounds wonderful! It’s not surprising you’re up and about. Thank you for sharing. I think you should point out to Graham that by not doing any more work on the house before the new year will give him lots to look forward to doing come January. Now both of you should enjoy your new home and the upcoming holidays with feet up and Dolly on laps.

Dolly does not look pleased.:-) I had some trouble hearing, gosh I hate that is going. Two old deaf people will leave a bunch of sore throats from shouting, or a bunch of post it notes. lol

Couldn’t hear it very well here either, bonnie. So it’s not ‘your’ hearing. Must be mine as well. Had the volume up all the way too! Did pick out a few words here and there. Especially the ‘good strong rum’ at the end – lol.
No – The old gal Dolly did not seem impressed nor inclined to give comment.
Glad you’re feeling better, John. Give Graham our regards and wishes that he’s feeling better in the next couple of days.
As for your hot toddy…I’d say I’d have to be sitting right on the bed while I drank it so I wouldn’t have to walk at all after drinking it!

A virtual Dolly with virtual snowflakes falling across her looks more than virtually unpleased!

I was able to hear pretty good and felt that the sound wasn’t the best because John’s voice is still not at it’s best. You still sounded a wee bit plugged up. I just read this morning (and will try tonight!!) that if you rub Vick’s Vapour Rub on your feet at night and then put on an old pair of socks, it will totally STOP you from coughing. I don’t know if you have Vick’s over there but it sure is worth a try. Not getting much sleep at all with all the coughing and sneezing I am doing!
Cheers,
Maggie

Another night-time remedy is to put Vicks Vaporub on the soles of your feet, then put on socks, then go to bed.
I once mixed cold remedy powder with vodka in an attempt to sleep through a really wicked cold. I was VERY ill from that mixture.

Don’t feel bad, you “old deaf” gals, because the option to play the video doesn’t even *appear* on my screen!! Harrumph, as Dolly would say.
And I can see the snowflakes falling across the header, but no kittycat …

Well, now I know I’m not deaf (or only in one ear, at any rate) but not only do I get not a peep of anything in the way of listening, but also nothing for looking at, either! Waaaa! I wanna SEE! The snowflakes do fall nicely, though, and to great effect.
Glad you’re better, John, and my best wishes for a fast recovery for Graham. And Momma Kitty sends best wishes to Dolly, as well.

There is a sort of commentary on the video but… subdued is putting it mildly. I shall try better next time.

I am so sorry to have posted a remedy after another reader posted it.
Then again, if two of us have heard of it, perhaps it is a popular remedy.

Dolly doesn’t perform to order!
I’m so glad somebody mentioned the snow, I thought my eyes were going!

Happy Birthday (belated) to Graham. We December babies are the best, as I’m sure you know. Delighted to hear that you’re over the worst of the evil cough/cold/flu and on the mend. Your rum/lemon/honey mixture is just the thing. My dad used to give it to me when I was little and so miserable; slept like a baby. Still works, 60 years later.

Hi John,
A bit belated but there’s good reason for it! Wanted to thank you for posting your hot rum toddy recipe. Have had a bear of a cough/cold that will not go away. Took loads of over the counter cold remedies to no avail. Finally remembered your hot toddy recipe and spent yesterday sipping toddies. Must say they’ve worked a treat! It’s the only thing so far to bring any relief. Still coughing this morning but it’s become “productive”. Another day of toddies is in order but I finally feel like I’m on the mend. Tried your variant as well and had a lovely night’s sleep! So thanks for all the wisdom! I’m feeling very grateful for it.
Happy New Year to you and Graham!
