Sunday October 19, 2008
I slept through until 08:30 this morning, with just a short hip relief break at about 03:30. Graham was up and about, working, at 06:30.
Then, somewhere around 10:30, his limit was reached and he was obliged to collapse for a well-earned rest, sleeping like a little snoring log until 13:30 and waking ravenously hungry for his lunch.
The trouble was, we’d scheduled soup and bread for today’s lunch and he needed more. Much more. My cupboard and freezer are not stocked yet so a bit of rapid thinking was called for.
“How’s about we pop down to Burger King for a double whopper with double everything?” I asked.
His little eyes lighted up. ”You know what? I could really fancy that.”
So that is what we did. I had exactly the same, of course, but then I did have to keep him company, didn’t I?
The day hasn’t been so very productive, then, though new bookshelves have been installed in my study and are being populated with stuff as I write. My study hi-fi is up and running, and sounding sweet as syrup.
I did get out into the street for a camera session in spite of the damp, dull, grey light, typical of a Welsh Sunday afternoon. One photograph, of the house, is worth keeping:

Our split-level villa in the valley
Needless to say, Dolly the Mega-cat is getting a great deal of attention from both of us, never being passed without a gentle enquiry. She’s fine. She’s had a couple of mad sessions as one or another of her scratty old cat-nip mice appeared from in or under cardboard boxes, but most of the time she’s spent contentedly sleeping, tucked deep into the cushions on my armchair. This house drops temperature over-night, so she snuggles up on the bed when all goes quiet. All in all she displays the calm, sensible fortitude needed to govern her household through the disturbances.
“I wonder if the Americans might not like her for their next president?” I said.
“They can’t have her.”
“No, of course not. Seems a shame not to offer them the chance, though. I’ll take a poll, on a strictly non-partisan and unscientific basis of course:”

Given the present state of US politics and the negative campaigning going on, I hardly think this is a fair poll. Dolly will win, hands down!! I volunteer to give her a place to stay on her victory tour.

Oh, I meant to ask – is the bit of house in the back with the white siding and satellite dish part of your house, or a separate house behind you?
Monique // October 19, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
Well, it must be Dolly of course. Easily the best and most reasonable choice.

I fear we shall have to revert to a monarchy for Dolly to be our chief executive. She is a Queen,* after all.
Love the house!
Hugs from the far side of the world,

I see Dolly is garnering all the votes, including mine.
I’m sitting here being all proud of myself because your new house is one I selected as being “it” during my second scouring of internet listings after you gave us a little additional information. From what I recall of the description (the link is on my other computer and probably doesn’t work anymore anyway), this place should be wonderful for all of you.

Dang, Wendy. Did the link show a floor plan? I’m dying of curiosity, here. John, thanks for the photos. You may have kept my head from exploding. (grin) Wolfie will know what I’m talking about when I say the vicare is appreciated.
Vicare: noun: the process of vicariously sharing experiences; care package for vicarious sharing; pacifier to soothe friends who would otherwise subject one to annoying whining.

Lovely little house in the valley! That’s a nice little lawn in the front for Graham to give it a personal touch, you will keep the grass, won’t you?
Yes, take the time to gather yourselves and get your bearings, plenty of time to forge ahead with plans.
I like that last picture of you and Dolly gazing intently at the garden, seems she’s making one more memory for the road… And the one in her carrier, a sizable one fit a famous mega cat!

It’s lovely, John – and I’ll bet you’re both glad that you have an attached garage!
Voted for Dolly ‘The Mega Cat’!, of course! Who else is there? ‘cept ‘Sparkey’ (Gordo’s dog). But I’m told ‘Sparkey’ just doesn’t understand.
Can’t wait to see pics of the backyard (oops – garden).
Glad Dee gave us the heads-up on ‘Vicare! I think I’ll use that as a new word in my vocabulary. And I wish I’d have had Wendy’s e-mail address so I could have collaborated with her.

oops… read *fit for*

A real no-brainer, that poll. What’s to choose? Dolly’s the only with with a lick of good sense. Knows what to do, and when to do it, and that’s really all anyone needs, n’est-ce pas?

In my imagination I am wondering if the garage door is to get any colour to set it apart? lol
That looks like a hill behind you.

Kate and Jim, his dog is Sharkey, but I am thinking Dolly for pres, Sharkey for veep?
Kate & Jim // October 19, 2008 at 10:55 pm |
Sparkey – Sharkey – Obama – McCain…Gosh! Palin – Biden! OR… DOLLY???
DOLLY for President.
SHARKEY for Veep.
Works for me.
as Mary Lee says: “n’est-ce pas” ?

Lovely, John. I can’t wait to see more photos and to find out what you’re going to do with the little place.
Ooh, you’ve really got me wanting a burger now… and it’s after midnight!

Lovely looking house. Be happy.

I just voted for her!
Unfortunately, she is not eligible. This is not anti-feline bigotry; the Constitution, however, requires that a president must have attained the oage of 35 and be a natural born citizen of the U.S. and must have lived in the United States for fourteen years. (Well, it actually says natural born citizen OR a citizen at the time the Constitution was adopted… but there isn’t anyone around these days who meets that alternative requirement — not even McCain.)
People often also say that the president and vice president can’t be from the same state but that is not true. What the Constitution says is that Electors (members of the Electoral College selected from the various states) from a given state cannot vote for someone from their state for both offices (that is, for president and for vice president). In actual practice, no political party wants to throw away an entire state’s worth of electoral votes, so they avoid running candidates who are from the same state. That’s why Dick Chaney changed his legal residence from Texas back to his home state of Wyoming before
So Doll isn’t eligible… even though she won your poll by a landslide.

Heh… what fun! Perhaps the real candidates should study Dolly to determine what she’s got that they lack…
Mark // October 20, 2008 at 6:59 am |
Congrats
The house looks great. It will make a nice presidential retreat for Presodent Dolly.
maddy // October 20, 2008 at 1:10 pm |
I don’t know about president, but there’s a certain candidate running unopposed here in AZ whom I refuse to vote for. I was going to write in ‘mickey mouse’, but now dolly really will get a vote!
Lovely house, and I think it suits you, sir! *snickering at her own silly reference and wondering if anyone else will get it*
Maureen // October 20, 2008 at 2:01 pm |
It looks lovely, your new home.Dolly got my vote too!
Neva // October 20, 2008 at 5:05 pm |
Me too, Maddy. I live in Southern Arizona, but McCain will NOT get my vote, for many reasons, and one of the biggest is Palin.
Dolly has my vote!
maddy // October 21, 2008 at 1:53 pm |
Neva, I’m in Tucson. Ann Day will be runnung against Dolly the mega cat this year! And Palin? *shudder*

Love the house! I can’t wait for pics of the inside. Of course Dolly has my vote, I just hope that she will pick a decent VP candidate.
