A day that started out looking fine and promising more quiet enjoyment. Then the emails started hitting the fan.
It transpired that the previous buyers’ solicitor was not just being tardy with the contract documents and HIP. They’d lost the darn things. Sally our solicitor was splendidly gentle and soothing with me–Gosh, but she knows how to handle irrational older gentlemen–but I suspect that she was less than gentle and not in the least soothing to the solicitors’ clerk at the other end.
“Leave it with me and I’ll get back to you this afternoon, John,” she typed. “As a precaution, though, it might be worthwhile seeing if you can get a new copy of the HIP.”
“I’ll do that,” I said. “If need be we’ll pay for a new one on an emergency basis. In that case I shall of course look to the errant solicitor for reimbursement.”
“That’s a good line. There’s just time to pass it on to him before he goes off for his lunch.”
Graham, several stages beyond incandescent, peeled himself from the ceiling.
“I don’t know how you can keep so cool,” he spluttered. He does a good splutter.
“Years of experience and a deep inner conviction that none of it’ll matter in a hundred years.”
“Bloody silly expression. Can’t you do better than that?”
“Nope. Not worth the effort. I’ll go and poke around the garden with me stick instead. Put the coffee on, there’s a dear.”
Anyway, it all worked out OK by the end of the day, and the errant documents were placed in the express post. “I was a little firm,” Sally said. I’ll bet my little cotton socks she was.

That’s so funny – Graham clinging to the ceiling in rage. It’s hard to stay calm and cool when dealing with incompetents. Glad Sally know how to cope. Your flowers are gorgeous, thanks for the treat.

Ohhhhh, gorgeous garden, incredible foxglove. When my cousin and I were kidlets, we used to cap each of our fat little fingers with foxglove blossoms and pretend they were glamorous fingernails. It didn’t hurt that we could suck the nectar from the stem end as an extra treat.
Your Sally is a treasure, isn’t she? Keep her around.

I share office space with another self-employed real estate paralegal and we’re sitting here chuckling. Sally is most definitely our type of attorney.

John I’m just plain lost “previous buyers’ solicitor”? Befuddled as why would a previous buyer be involved? Wouldn’t it be a current buyer?
Maybe I should go have a coffee. Stop laughing.
In the meantime you need to get a spatula to scrape Graham off the ceiling henceforth.

Sally does indeed sound like the right kind of lawyer to have on your side.

Beautiful and inviting corner at the end of your summer garden. What happened to the gnome, is he packed away already?

We’re beginning to think of the house move as a done deal which, as you know, is a dangerous thing to do. It isn’t until contracts are signed and exchanged, and the 10% deposits paid that both sides are committed to go forward to completion, under penalties for failure or delay. We don’t start packing until that milestone is passed safely.
We are however doing some preliminary packing, of stuff we know we’ll not need here even if the deal does fall through.

Great photo John. I like foxgloves. Shame about the missing paperwork though. I’d be at the stage of wanting to throttle someone by now.

Great pics!
Of course, Sally knows if she isn’t firm, she gets no payment in the end.

I’m like Graham, sitting on the edge of my chair.
